Tom Abate is a biotechnology reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. He received his Master's Degree in Journalism from Columbia University, where he focused on science writing. He has worked in the San Francisco newspaper community since 1992, beginning as a science writer and becoming a technology columnist before assuming his current post. Journalism is his second career. Previously, he was a small press publisher in Northern California. A Brooklyn native and U.S. Navy veteran, Tom obtained his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, where he majored in political science and minored in Mandarin. He and wife Mia Ousley and their two sons, Julius and Aeneas, live in the East Bay.
