Presidio Plans Create Controversy

A new redevelopment plan for the Presidio's historic Main Post faced strong opposition this week. The proposal would expand the Presidio Theater, add a 89,000 sq. ft. lodge, and a 100,000 sq. ft. modern art museum that will house the art collection of Gap founders Donald and Doris Fisher. Demolition of the park's bowling alley, tennis courts, and historic Red Cross building would be required to accommodate the new museum. Opponents of the plan say the development could jeopardize the park's historic landmark status and lead to traffic congestion in the surrounding neighborhood. The museum, lodge, and expanded movie theater are projected to boost tourism in the park from 650,000 to 2.4 million guests annually.
