Arizona Sen. John McCain defended his endorsement of offshore oil drilling during campaign stops in California this week. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee says that more coastal drilling would pave the way toward U.S. oil independence, but the idea is unpopular in California even with some of his supporters, including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. McCain's stance may cost him votes in the state and a recent Los Angeles Times poll shows he trails presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama by 12 points. Obama attended a star-studded fund raiser in California this week and is expected to make his first campaign appearance with former rival New York Sen. Hillary Clinton on Friday in New Hampshire.
