Plans Released By California Air Resources Board

The California Air Resources Board released a draft plan to combat climate change this week. The proposal is the next step in the state's implementation of the landmark AB 32 law requiring reduced greenhouse gas emissions to1990 levels by 2020. The preliminary recommendations include limiting tailpipe emissions, increasing cleaner fuel production, increasing renewable energy usage by utility companies, and establishing a new cap and trade system for carbon credits. With the state facing economic woes, Republicans and some industry leaders are concerned about the potential cost of the plan, but environmentalist say that implementing AB 32 could actually improve the economy by increasing green technology and industries. The board will take public comment throughout the summer and vote on the recommendations in November. The approved plan will be implemented in 2012. With: Paul Rogers.
